Retainers

Retainers are a very important part of your orthodontic treatment, used to keep your teeth in their new straight positions and prevent any relapse. Your custom-made retainer is an accurate and snug fit, ensuring it is comfortable to wear overnight while you sleep. Retainers are for life. If not worn correctly or regularly, your teeth will gradually move back to their original positions and undo all the hard work during your treatment. I am happy to give you personalised instruction and advice for your retainers.

Some patients may choose, or would benefit from, the addition of bonded retainers alongside their removable ones. These are attached onto the inside surface of the front teeth with composite bonding, and provide added security against unwanted relapse.

Regardless of your retainer choices, I ensure all my patients are followed up for one year post-treatment, to ensure the retainers are functioning properly.

Regular check ups

After orthodontic treatment, it is important that you keep up with your regular dental care. Your routine check up and hygiene appointments allow your dentist to keep an eye on your teeth in their new positions, as well as your overall oral health. Seeing your dentist regularly also gives you the chance to talk about any concerns or issues you may have with your retainers, and the fit can also be checked.
