Training and early experience

I qualified from the University of Liverpool in 2006, winning the Malcolm Foster silver medal for the best undergraduate research project in my year.

After a year in general dental practice, I returned to Liverpool Dental Hospital to complete a year of general professional training, which involved oral surgery, special care dentistry, and paediatric rotations.

From 2008, I spent two years as a maxillofacial senior house officer, moving around the Merseyside region and caring for patients with head and neck cancer and skeletal abnormalities.

About

Becoming a Specialist Orthodontist

In 2010, I began my Specialist Registrar training in Orthodontics at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital in Sheffield and the Royal Chesterfield Hospital. I was awarded a Master’s with Merit from the University of Sheffield in 2012, and completed my specialist training in 2013, achieving my MOrth from RCS Eng.

In 2015, I completed my training as a Consultant Orthodontist at Sheffield and Chesterfield (FDS). I was appointed as Consultant at Queen’s Medical Centre in 2016.

As such, I have been trained to treat all aspects of your orthodontic concerns, from a smile enhancement to complex orthodontics requiring multi-disciplinary care.

About

Lecturing and research

I am an honorary clinical lecturer at the University of Sheffield, providing teaching to postgraduates and, regionally, newly qualified dentists. I am a reviewer for various orthodontic journals and an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. (MFDS 2021-23 and LDS 2017 onwards, England).

My main research interests include orthognathic surgery and patient-centred outcomes of treatment, and I have published and lectured on these topics.

Recently, I was part of a working party who developed a jaw surgery information resource with the British Orthodontic Society, to aid patients in their understanding and decision making. Visit yourjawsurgery.com for more information.

I am currently Chair of the British Orthodontic Society Consultant Orthodontic Group, representing the profession at a national level. I was a past treasurer of the British Orthodontic Society, TGG committee and have previously represented the BOS on the RCS clinical standards committee. I was also a Speciality Advisor for Orthodontics for the South Yorkshire and East Midlands region from 2018-2020.
